A Camera Dolly, or dolly camera, is a device used to create smooth horizontal movements, which contributes to the overall dramatic effect of the piece. The camera is secured to mounting elements which are then secured to a dolly. Depending on the size of the dolly, the camera operator may move the dolly, or the dolly may be moved by a dolly grip.
The camera dolly is a site of innovation for filmmakers at every level, from large studio dollies that work pneumatically and hold the camera operator and director or focus puller, remote controlled electric dollies that cover large outdoor events, and quick manual fixes on indie film sets (skateboard, shopping cart, bicycle).
