Chamfering is a machining process that creates a sloped or angled edge where two surfaces meet, often at a 45-degree angle. Chamfers are used to remove sharp edges, improve part handling, and enhance the overall appearance of a part. They can also reduce stress concentrations and make assembly easier in certain applications.

At MYT Works, we previously used chamfering tools to mill 15 to 25 millimeter chamfers on the edges of our Camera Sliders and Skater Dollies. Chamfers were an effective solution for creating clean, angled edges. However, for some applications, we transitioned to fillets, which are rounded edges. Fillets can provide a smoother feel when handling a part and may offer additional durability by reducing wear on anodized surfaces.
Both chamfers and fillets have their advantages and can be used depending on the specific needs of a part. Chamfers are great for achieving sharp, angled edges, while fillets are better for creating rounded, contoured edges that may improve comfort and longevity. The choice between the two often depends on the part’s design and how it will be used.
